35 tonnes a day
Brim’s fresher trawler Akurey has been fishing on the Eldey Bank, where skipper Eiríkur Jónsson said as the trip was coming to an end that he hoped for a a few more tonnes of cod before heading home for a landing scheduled for today.
‘Catch rates have been decent these last few weeks. Earlier today we had between 110 and 115 tonnes on board after roughly three days’s fishing. That’s a respectable 35 tonnes a day,’ he said, adding that this is a mixed fish catch of more or less equal amounts of cod, golden redfish and saithe.
‘We started the trip on the Eldey Bank and shifted across to the Selvogur Bank. There was good fishing on both areas. I decided to finish the trip on the Eldey Bank and there was some heavy fishing for cod there two or three days earlier,’ he said, commenting that this is quality fish and ideal raw material.
‘For example, the cod is very good. The average weight is between four and five kilos. I’ve been hearing that other skippers feel the saithe grades have been on the small side, but that hasn’t been our experience,’ Eiríkur Jónsson said.
