Vopnafjördur crane short of a bearing

‘If everything works out, the discharging gear should be working again around the end of November or early December, and if the capelin season isn’t in full swing by then, the accident shouldn’t have caused any problems. We still have plenty of space in the meal tanks, and if push comes to shove, we can ship out meal using the old-fashioned method. But that would be a last resort,’ said Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson, factory manager at HB Grandi’s pelagic factory in Vopnafjördur.

There was considerable damage to the company’s discharging gear for fishmeal at the harbour in Vopnafjördur at the end of September when cargo vessel Green Crystal collided with the discharging crane. The discharging system had been designed and built by Hédinn hf, and the same company was immediately contracted to repair the damage. Before the system was introduced, all fishmeal had to be bagged and transported to the quay by truck.

‘The equipment that was damaged has been taken down and shipped to Reykjavík. The problem is that it can take up to eight weeks to get the bearings for the crane, and these were immediately ordered from Denmark. I know that the staff at Hédinn have done everything they can to speed the process up, and at the latest it should be here at the end of next month. It shouldn’t take long to fit the bearing and we are hopeful that everything should be back in working order by late November or at the beginning of December,’ Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson said.
