Groundfish landing at Akranes
HB Grandi’s Akranes factory has today been processing fish landed by fresher trawler Sturlaugur H Bödvarsson. This is something of a milestone as this is the first groundfish landing by an HB Grandi vessel at Akranes for six years.
According to Loftur Bjarni Gudmundsson, fleet manager for HB Grandi’s fresher trawlers, the last groundfish landing there was on the 31st of May 2008, with fish also landed then by Sturlaugur H Bödvarsson.
‘Sturlaugur was fishing off the east coast and the catch is around 90 tonnes of cod. All of our cod production now takes place in Akranes where we produce from between 100 and 200 tonnes every week. The volume varies according to the season and over the last few years fish has been trucked from Reykjavík to Akranes. We see landing direct in Akranes as a way of streamlining operations and we hope that we can continue landing our fresher trawlers there,’ Loftur Bjarni Gudmundsson said.
A workforce of approximately a one hundred staffs the processing plant in Akranes and when production was at its lowest point the staff had dropped down to only twenty.
