Blue whiting season over
Ingunn AK docked in Vopnafjördur yesterday with 2000 tonnes of blue whiting in its tanks, caught on fishing grounds south of the Faroes at the weekend. According to skipper Róbert Axelsson, fishing went well and for a change, the weather was remarkably kind to them.
This landing brings to an end HB Grandi’s blue whiting quota for this season, which lasted one month. The catch came to a total of 21,000 tonnes, leaving around 1100 tonnes that is kept back to cover by-catches of blue whiting taken during the mackerel and Atlanto-Scandian herring fisheries. These are expected to start in early July.
‘It didn’t look too good when we were leaving Vopnafjördur, but the forecast changed and the weather’s been fine apart from a rough patch on the first day. We had al our fish in five hauls over forty-eight hours. The blue whiting are starting to put on weight and there’s plenty of life on those fishing grounds now. The stock appears to be pretty healthy, taking into account what we’ve seen these last few weeks,’ Róbert Axelsson said.
