Meal silos to go this week
Preparation has been in progress to move HB Grandi’s meal silos from Reykjavík to Vopnafjördur using a barge that is on its way from Norway and is due later this week. If everything works out according to plan and the weather is favourable, the silos are expected to be unloaded at their new permanent home in Vopnafjördur on Monday 13th of July.
According to HB Grandi’s pelagic operations manager Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson, the plan is to load the silos onto the barge on Thursday or Friday.
The silos were part of the company’s fishmeal plant in Reykjavík, but production there came to an end in 2005. Previously 18 metres high, the silos have since been extended by four metres, which was done partly to allow expansion hatches to be fitted, as these are now a requirement.
As well as the silos, other equipment that was used at the plant in Reykjavík will also be shipped east to Vopnafjördur to be used in the factory there.
