Top-quality cod on westfjords grounds
HB Grandi’s fresher trawler Sturlaugur H Bödvarsson is now steaming south after a successful trip of north-western Iceland and is due to be alongside tonight. The catch for this trip is around 120 tonnes of mostly cod, of which 70 tonnes were put ashore in Ísafjördur last Sunday.
‘There has been some excellent fishing on cod off the Westfjords, on both deep and shallow grounds, and this is top-quality fish of between three and as much as ten kilos,’ reported chief mate Magnús Kristjánsson when we spoke to him earlier.
Most of HB Grandi’s groundfish quotas are redfish and saithe, but Magnús Kristjánsson said that this time to focus was out on cod for the company’s processing factory in Akranes.
‘We saw a bit of haddock and saithe in this trip, and a few redfish on the Hali grounds, but it’s not the right time of year for redfish there,’ he said and added that the trip started on the 9th of January and has lasted roughly a week.
