Cod all inside the line
‘This trip the aim was to search out saithe and cod in amounts worth fishing for. That worked out for the saithe, but the cod are all inside the line and probably right up by the shore and spawning there,’ said Magnús Kristjánsson, skipper of Akurey, which is now in port in Reykjavík.
The catch for the trip was 130 tonnes.
Magnús said that the trip had started on the Eldey Bank, but fishing there was poor.
‘So we shifted to the Selvogur Bank. There was heavy fishing for haddock, but no cod to be seen on the trawl grounds. The next stop was the Mountains. As usual, there was plenty of golden redfish and we found a good amount of saithe as well, so overall this was a good trip,’ he said, commenting that he doesn’t expect fishing for cod to improve off the south-west coast until spawning is over.
Cod are tight to the shore everywhere while they spawn. There is no cod to be seen in areas such as the Jökull Deeps where there had been good fishing recently.
Akurey is due to sail tomorrow evening, but first the crew will have to take new trawl warps on board.
