North coast fishing slowing down
Fresher trawler Akurey was due to dock in Sauðárkrókur this afternoon after a four-day trip on fishing grounds off the north coast. According to skipper Magnús Kristjánsson, cod has been scarce and heavy weather has made this a challenging trip.
‘The weather has been bad, especially the last few days. We started out fishing with two trawls, but after the weather conditions worsened significantly, there was nothing for it but to go back to a single rig,’ he said.
Akurey has been fishing off the north coast since June, and he commented that for almost all of that time there has been cod on the fishing grounds.
‘Now the cod are heading elsewhere and this hasn’t been much of a trip. This time we have 65 tonnes and more than 50 tonnes of that is cod. We searched as far east as the Sléttugrunn grounds, but apart from that we’ve been mainly here off Skagafjörður. It wouldn’t be a surprise if we’re sent to the Westfjords fishing grounds next time, but we’ll wait and see,’ Magnús Kristjánsson said.
