Good trip for Akurey
Fresher trawler Akurey was expected to dock in Sauðárkrókur Yesterday with 170 tonnes on board after four days’ fishing. Akurey sailed from Reykjavík on Friday last week.
‘We’ve been fishing for cod off the north coast for the last part of the summer and fishing has been good,’ said this trip’s skipper Magnús Kristjánsson.
He commented that cod have clearly been seeking out more northerly waters that usual as they search for feed, and there are no cod to be had on recognised cod grounds off the Westfjords such as the Hali grounds and the banks to the south-west of it. Those fishing off the Westfjords are looking for saithe.
‘Up here to the north we have been seeing good cod catches and in this trip the furthest east we went was the Sléttagrunn grounds. We’ve been aware of plenty of feed fish, such as mackerel, herring and shrimp. We haven’t seen any capelin. As well as the cod, there’s some saithe, but when we want to find redfish then we need to be fishing off the west and the south-west,’ Magnús Kristjánsson said.
