Vopnafjörður ready for blue whiting season
Improvements to HB Grandi’s fishmeal plant in Vopnafjörður are now complete and ready to take delivery of the first landings of the year. The refurbishment centred around renewing the factory’s boilers. There are hopes that the blue whiting fishery west of Ireland will be underway soon, so that there will soon be blue whiting to be processed at the Vopnafjörður factory.
‘Work on the refurbishments went better than we could have hoped, and we were finished ahead of the projected 20th January completion date,’ said factory manager Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson.
As we have already reported, the roof of the factory had to be opened so that the new boilers could be lifted into place and the old ones removed. Sveinbjörn said that the roof was opened around midday on Friday. The new boilers were in place the following day and the building had been made weathertight again before midday on the following Tuesday.
‘It’s clear that these new boilers are going to be an improvement. They will allow us to save energy, but we don’t know how much of a saving that will be until the factory has run for a few weeks or months. I’m hoping that we’ll also see increased production. This should be achieved simply because the new equipment does not require such frequent cleaning as the old ones, so longer intervals between cleaning is a straightforward increase in efficiency,’ Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson said.
