Fine fishing, fine weather
HB Grandi’s fresher trawler Helga María sailed from Reykjavík Yesterday after landing 165 tonnes of fish caught during a successful trip to Westfjords fishing grounds. Heimir Guðbjörnsson, Helga María’s skipper, said that he can’t remember seeing such fine weather off the Westfjords at this time of year.
As far as fishing is concerned, he reported that the trip began in the Víkuráll Gully.
‘We did well on redfish, enough to keep production running. Then we shifted northwards and as far as the western edge of the bank before we reached the Hali grounds, where we picked up the cod for this trip. There wasn’t much fishing in the Hali area itself, mainly a small showing of saithe, and we headed back to the Víkuráll Gully.’
A fortunate change in the fishing meant that as Helga María and its crew shot away in the Víkuráll area, the saithe showed up there.
‘We had a good spell on saithe while were there and had a fine catch of saithe on the last day of the trip. Now there’s a storm forecast for the Westfjords over the next few days, so there’s no point going straight back there. So we started this trip on home grounds off the south-west,’ Heimir Guðbjörnsson said.
