Focus on cod
‘We’re not doing badly. We have been doing well on redfish and saithe, but we have had to search for cod. There are three days to catch our allocation, so I’m not concerned,’ said Engey’s skipper Friðleifur Einarsson, when we spoke to him yesterday afternoon, with Engey fishing in the Hali grounds after having started the trip in the Víkuráll gully.
‘We had a decent catch of redfish in the Víkuráll gully and some saithe with it. Since then we’ve worked our way north along the bank west of the Hali grounds, and we’ll have to wait and see how much further east we have to go to catch cod.’
He added that there are good areas for redfish on the Hali grounds, but he hopes to find cod deeper than the redfish.
‘We’ll have to wait and see if this is going to work out. It’s important to get as much as possible of the right species. Helga María is on the slipway at the moment, so it’s up to the rest of us to catch what’s left of the quotas. The quota year is almost finished and I expect to manage three more landings before the end of the month, and then the new quota year begins,’ Friðleifur Einarsson said.
