Strong showing of saithe

‘We started the trip on the Hali grounds off the Westfjords. There has been very good fishing for saithe there for some time, although it drops off for a day now and again. We weren’t disappointed as in the roughly 24 hours we were fishing we had 70 tonnes of saithe,’ said Heimir Guðbjörnsson, skipper of HB Grandi’s trawler Helga María.

Helga María docked in Reykjavík late on Sunday night with 156 tonnes in its fishroom, and Heimir Guðbjörnsson said that because of the 1st of May bank holiday during which the Norðurgarður factory is closed, they didn’t steam home with full load this time.

‘We turned this trip around because from the Hali grounds we steamed south and started fishing on the Eldey Bank right on the line. There was plenty of good cod to be found there, four to five kilo fish. But we didn’t stay there long and took two good hauls before shifting southwards to the World Champion Ridge in the Skerja Deeps. That’s where we finished our redfish allowance for the trip in twelve hours and finished up on the Selvogur Bank west of Surtsey,’ he said.

‘This trip to the Selvogur Bank was something of a mixed bag, and as well as the cod we had ling, haddock and a bit of redfish,’ Heimir Guðbjörnsson said.
