Capelin roe production starts at Akranes
Last night roe extraction began with capelin landed by HB Grandi’s pelagic vessel Venus. The roe content of capelin caught off the Reykjanes peninsula had reached 24% and 70% maturity.
Around a hundred staff are working on the roe extraction process at the Akranes factory and according to Gunnar Hermannsson who is in charge of roe production, capacity in extraction, and dewatering before freezing is between 1200 and 1500 tonnes of raw material per day.
‘This landing was ideal for roe production. We like to see a little more maturity, but that’s only going to increase. The roe needs 24 hours to drain before it can be frozen, so we’ll start freezing roe tomorrow,’ Gunnar Hermannsson said.
