A good showing of saithe

HB Grandi’s trawler Sturlaugur H Böðvarsson was fishing south-west of Reykjanes last week, in the area known as the Mountains, and according to skipper Eiríkur Jónsson, fishing has been good. After arriving on the fishing grounds, the first night was spent on some good saithe fishing.

‘I wouldn’t say this was heavy fishing, but it was steady. We did well on saithe during the first night, as well as on golden redfish on the Mountains,’ he said, adding that he expected to use Friday to steam to the Westfjords grounds for cod and other species.

‘There’s some bad weather forecast for Friday and we don’t expect it to drop away until late the following night. By then we’ll be ready to make a start,’ he said, commenting that they are scheduled to dock in Reykjavík on Tuesday.

The crew of Sturlaugur H Böðvarsson will soon be transferring to the new trawler Akurey, which is is currently alongside in Akranes where its automated fishroom and catch handling systems are being fitted by Skaginn 3X.
Eiríkur Jónsson lives in Akranes and said that when he is ashore, he gets to see a lot of the new trawler.

‘It goes without saying that it’s exciting to watch progress being made as all the equipment is installed. Then the computer systems all need to be fine-tuned, and the experience of sister vessel Engey is a big help there. If everything works out, we should be able to transfer to Akurey around the middle of next month,’ he said.
