Venus steaming to Vopnafjörður with 2500 tonnes on board

Fishing for blue whiting has been quiet in Faroese water over the last few days. Both of HB Grandi’s pelagic vessels have been fishing there and Venus is now steaming to Vopnafjörður with 2500 tonnes on on board.

According to second mate Hilmar Kárason, they were in a position west of the Faroe Islands and expect to be alongside in Vopnafjörður around midday on Sunday.

Skipper Róbert Axelsson commented earlier in the week that they were taking long tows for between 350 and 500 tonnes in each haul. Then they had 1600 to 1700 tonnes in the tanks and Hilmar Kárason said that catch rates have been steady at that level all week. The blue whiting are moving northwards and the fleet is following them.

According to production manager Sveinbjörn Sigmundsson at HB Grandi’s Vopnafjörður factory, both Venus and Víkingur were in port last weekend with a combined landing of around 5000 tonnes. It took approximately five days to work through the catch with no problems, he said.
