Dispersed capelin on Westfjords grounds
Capelin has been noticeable in increasing amounts on Westfjords fishing grounds and Heimir Guðbjörnsson, skipper of fresher trawler Helga María, said that there is dispersed capelin to be seen everywhere across Westfjords waters.
Helga María sailed from Reykjavík at midday last Thursday and was close to finishing its trip in the Nes Deeps when we contacted Heimir Guðbjörnsson.
‘We started in the Víkuráll Gully and had some very good golden redfish. Then we shifted north-eastwards along the edge of the Hali grounds for some mixed redfish and saithe. Then we had some cod further out in the colder water,’ he said, adding that from there they went to the Straumnes Bank off the Ísafjörður Deeps.
‘We caught some good, large cod there and some very large saithe at around eight kilos each. Then we towed in the Djúpkrókur area and east of it for more saithe. So now we need a few tonnes of cod to finish the trip and we have until tonight to get what we need as we’re scheduled to dock in Reykjavík in the morning,’ Heimir Guðbjörnsson said.
