Non-stop mackerel production at Vopnafjörður

Production at HB Grandi’s Vopnafjörður pelagic factory has gone well this summer and factory manager Magnús Róbertsson said that it has become a busy summer after the mackerel fishery’s slow start. The factory has been running at full production capacity for some time.

‘It has been very good recently. There was a break around the Bank Holiday weekend at the beginning of August, but since the 10th of August we have been running practically without any interruptions,’ he said, commenting that the factory runs its shifts around the clock.

The mackerel quality is similar to previous years and the fat content is around 20-22% – and production has been varied.

‘There has been very little herring by-catch with the mackerel and the skippers make efforts not to mix the two. There isn’t a large Atlanto-Scandian herring quota this year, but I’m still expecting to process some Atlanto-Scandian herring here before the Icelandic summer spawning herring starts, which we would expect to be in October,’ Magnús Róbertsson said.

There are between 65 and 70 permanent jobs at HB Grandi’s Vopnafjörður factory, and this has until now been highly seasonal work. This is set to change and to become more regular this coming winter when HB Grandi starts its groundfish production at the Vopnafjörður location.
