A thousand tonnes of capelin to Vopnafjörður
Venus NS docked at its home port of Vopnafjörður earlier today with approximately a thousand tonnes of capelin on board for frozen production at HB Grandi’s production plant there. This is an unusually late arrival of the first capelin of the season at Vopnafjörður.
‘We caught this capelin in three shots off Ingólfshöfði. We weren’t there long, arrived on the grounds the night before last and by eight last night we were steaming back to Vopnafjörður,’ said skipper Guðlaugur Jónsson when we spoke to him today. Venus’s capelin is already being discharged but there are no reports as yet of the roe content of the fish.
‘This is good quality fish, around 40 pieces per kilo. This was caught in the shallows off Ingólfshöfði in 20 fathoms. The fish are migrating fast and the fleet is now already fishing quite a way to the west,’ he said.
The fleet includes Víkingur AK, which is also on its way now to Vopnafjörður with capelin.
