A century of women's suffrage in Iceland – offices closed this afternoon
Today Iceland celebrates a century has passed since women were given the right to vote. The day is being celebrated across the country in a variety of ways. As part of the celebrations, HB Grandi’s entire staff ashore are being given a half day off and the company’s offices will be closed this afternoon.
HB Grandi has a staff of over 900 people, both ashore and at sea. According to the company’s Human Resource Manager, Elva Jóna Gylfadóttir, women fill the majority of work positions ashore. Overall, and including jobs at sea, women account for 35% of the company’s workforce.
As mentioned already, this remarkable day in the history of the battle for equality in Iceland is being commemorated in a variety of ways.
