New Year production ready to start
Production is set to start at HB Grandi’s Reykjavík and Akranes plants on the 2nd of January after being suspended for the Christmas break. The factory at Vopnafjördur has been closed since the end of the Icelandic summer-spawning herring season in October, but there are hopes that the capelin season will be underway early in the New Year.
According to Torfi Thorsteinsson, who manages HB Grandi’s groundfish department, fresher trawlers Asbörn, Sturlaugur Bödvarsson and Helga María all were at sea right after Christmas to provide raw material for production after the Christmas and New Year break.
After the end of the herring season, the option was there for the pelagic vessels to start on blue whiting at the beginning of December, but the decision was taken to delay this. According to Gardar Svavarsson, manager of HB Grandi’s pelagic division, the plan is to start on capelin in January.
