Women in Fisheries visited HB Grandi
HB Grandi’s Reykjavík headquarters earlier this week hosted a visit by 27 members of the Women in Fisheries group. Members hold a lunchtime meeting once every month, visiting industry-related companies and institutions, and this time HB Grandi got to host their meeting.
‘It was a very pleasant visit. We were able to offer a lunch of redfish at the canteen on Nordurgardur and some of the ladies who work at HB Grandi talked with the group. After lunch we held a presentation of HB Grandi’s activities followed by a lovely discussion that was joined by from human resources Elva Jóna Gylfadóttir, Inga Jóna Friðgeirsdóttir who manages the company’s fish drying activities and marketing representatives Sonja Óskarsdóttir and Fjóla Stefánsdóttir described their work. It’s clear that there are a great many talented women working in fisheries,’ commented HB Grandi’s marketing manager Brynjólfur Eyjólfsson.
Women in Fisheries is not an old organisation, having been started early last year. According to chairperson Hildur Sif Kristborgardóttir, its aims are to establish a positive network of women working in fisheries and related sectors.
‘There were ten of us who started the group, and now there are 115 members. It’s not only for women in management positions, this is an organisation for all women, as long as they work in fisheries or in something related to fisheries, regardless of their position,’ she said, commenting that as well as the regular lunch meetings, the group has also taken day trips to Grindavík and the Westmann Islands, visiting fisheries companies in both locations. On the agenda are visits to Snæfellsnes and also to fish processing companies in Reykjavík.
‘What we have seen is that there are more women joining the group after each visit. We would like to co-operate with the Universities and present to young women there the wealth of opportunities that can be found in the fishing industry and the linked business sectors around it. Sometimes you think you already know it all, but the visit to HB Grandi has been a real experience I can hardly wait for a tour of the processing plant to see the equipment used there,’ Hildur Sif Kristborgardóttir said.
