Price increases this year for seafrozen redfish and saithe

There have been significant increases in the prices of seafrozen redfish and saithe products this year. Prices of 300-500g golden redfish have risen by 33% since the beginning of the year and 16-32oz saithe fillets are up by 25%.

‘This means that we have been putting increased emphasis on seafrozen production for these products instead of land production,’ said HB Grandi sales manager Smári Einarsson.

‘In general, the fleet has been fishing well and there are prospects that the prices for these seafrozen products will remain high. Flexibility in fleet management is crucial here. The company is able to shift quotas between the fresh fish trawlers and the freezer trawlers to respond quickly to changes in the market. This is what we have been able to do, and have switched the focus of land production to cod while more redfish and saithe quotas have been allocated to the freezer trawlers.’

Landfrozen prices expected to rise

Prices for landfrozen products have been stable, but prices are expected to rise as the volume of land based products has decreased compared to the company’s seafrozen and fresh production.

According to Davíd J. Davídsson, sales manager in charge of landfrozen products, there are exciting times ahead for land based production. The price patterns for land based products have frequently followed the trends for seafrozen products. In addition, it will be interesting to see the effects that MSC certification has on the demand for golden redfish.
